Cliff Lee’s pitching helps Philadelphia Phillies defeat Arizona Diamondbacks 9-2 - MLB Update
Philadelphia Phillies’ starter, Cliff Lee was remarkable throughout the game as he struck-out seven batters and allowed just two earned runs with an ERA of 2.82 in the Phillies’ 9-2 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Citizens Bank Park, Philadelphia
on August 17.
Phillies’ batters posted their initial run during first inning and got a 1-0 lead when Jimmy Rollins hit a solo homer (406 feet) to left-centre. It was considered as the 14th home-run for Rollins in the current season. At the top of second inning,
Diamondbacks scored two runs to go-ahead but Phillies again added one run to their respective score-card to tie the game 2-2, at the bottom of second inning.
Paul Goldschmidt struck a two-run homer (400 feet) to left-centre and Chris Young scored a single run to give the Diamondbacks an edge over Phillies. On the other side, Hunter Pence posted a tie run to level the game when John Mayberry Jr. singled towards
centre-field and Wilson Valdez moved to third to end the second inning.
The middle innings from third to sixth remained empty as the batters failed to connect the ball properly. Pence walked during fourth inning but of no vain as at third base, Mayberry Jr. fouled out and at first base Valdez lined out without any run. Ryan
Roberts hit a single-run shot towards left-field but at right-field, Willie Bloomquist flied out without taking even a single run. Later on, Roberts also got out to second base, at the top of sixth inning.
Seventh inning was in favour of Phillies as they smashed three runs to advance their lead 5-2. Mayberry Jr. and Pence both contributed two collective runs when Valdez doubled to deep centre-field. Ben Francisco hit a sacrifice fly to centre-field and Valdez
added one run to end the three-run campaign.
Phillies took a 9-2 lead during the eighth inning when the batters blasted four quick runs. Ryan Howard, Pence, Mayberry Jr. and Valdez each singled to complete a four-run campaign While Brian Schneider moved towards third base to end the eighth inning.
Lee pitched seven innings and gifted three hits, two runs and one home-run.
Diamondbacks were score-less in ninth inning also as Roberts walked but at third base, Bloomquist fouled out and at second base Young popped out without scoring runs. However, Phillies levelled the three-game series 1-1 played at Citizens Bank Park.
