Cliff Lee’s seven shut-out innings help Philadelphia Phillies humiliate New York Mets 10-0
Philadelphia Phillies’ starter, Cliff Lee had an extraordinary day with the ball as he gave up only three hits in his seven shut-out innings with an ERA of 2.71 which resulted in the Phillies’ 10-0 victory against the New York Mets at Citizens Bank Park,
Philadelphia on August 22.
In the first inning, the batters were shaky with their shots and were unable to dominate over the pitchers. Justin Turner was saved to reach at first base on the error of Phillies’ short-stop Wilson Valdez but Angel Pagan and Jason Bay both flied out to
centre-field without adding even a single run.
Phillies added three runs to their individual score-card during the second inning and took a 3-0 lead. Hunter Pence scored first run for Phillies when Valdez drove a single-run shot towards right-field. The second and third runs were taken by Valdez and
Lee when Shane Victorino tripled to right-field.
At the bottom of third inning, Phillies got a 5-0 lead by posting two runs. John Mayberry Jr. hit a two-run homer (373 feet) towards left-field and Pence scored a single run. Phillies’ batters continued to raise their lead as during fourth inning, they again
smashed three runs to advance their lead 8-0.
Mayberry Jr. walked, Victorino contributed one run, Placido Polanco moved to third base and Pence occupied second base at the bottom of fourth inning. Polanco and Pence added two collective runs when Carlos Ruiz hit a single-run drive to right-centre. Mayberry
Jr. advanced to third base to complete the fourth inning.
Mets’ first baseman, Nick Evans walked during the fifth inning but the rest of his team-mates did not score any runs. Lee permitted three walks on his 105 pitches and had seven strike-outs.
In the sixth inning, Phillies got a 10-0 lead when Pence homered (405 feet) to left-centre and Ryan Howard added a single run. The final three innings of the game were score-less for both sides. Mets missed some runs in the ninth inning when Lucas Duda hit
a single-run shot to centre-field and got out to second base when Willie Harris hit a grounder into double play.
After having this huge margin win, Phillies were on top with 1-0 in the three-game series against the Mets at Citizens Bank Park.
