  1. Humans and cattle require more fuel (food) when in colder climates. Cattle thrive (as do humans) in warmer climates.

    If Earth goes into an 'little ice age' (as I suspect), cattle herds will be considerably thinned out!  Frozen beef on the hoof anyone?

  3. there are breeds adapted for many climates, one problem with drought in sub saharan africa is where herders have been encouraged to switch to 'higher yield' european based strains instead of the local varieties. (another is inabiltiy to move away from drought areas and rotate grazing, but that's another story). at the other end of the scale, there are hairy scottish and scandinavian breeds that can cope with seriously cold weather, months of freezing and no new grass, some even eat seaweed. there are also breeds that live in swamps. so, basically, nearly anywhere people can live, its only overbred modern high yeild cows need dry ground, warm byres in winter, and rich diets.
