Question:

Climate emigration?

I know someone whose entire family is moving to Australia in a few years because they are expecting there to be panic emigration in 50 or so years and want to secure the future of their grandkids etc... The reason being England will be under water in this said time.

Regardless of whether you believe this is a good reason, (or even a real reason) to move, would you say this is an unprincipled and cowardly thing to do?

  1. Assuming AGW is real, England wont be underwater. They have a billion dollar project which contains walls which can raise for 30 feet or so, I don't know. But those walls surround all of England.

  2. its only london, and good riddance. well, maybe bristol, liverpool, hull, you know, the ports. i think in the short term they would be better off here, but in the long term i would bet on oz being a more stable society despite severe drought. better attitude.

  3. Preservation of one's family at all costs strikes me as the least cowardly thing one can do.

Moving to a large island dominated by desert and already experiencing severe water shortages seems like the stupidest possible way to go about it.

England certainly isn't going to go under any time soon but I suppose the economy and currency could take a major hit as portions of London flood.

  4. hhahaha england will be underwater lol that was a movie not a news report...

  5. No, it's not unprincipled, particularly if they still do their best for the environment.

And they better.  Global warming threatens Australia with catastrophic drought.

  6. When they are shown to be gullible and wrong and broke, it may not be cowardly, but it would be pretty foolish in my opinion.

  7. I would not be too concerned about cowardice. The saying that when things get tough the tough get going should be completed.' but the smart have already gone.'

However, based on climate trends in Australia, a lot of Australians are questioning whether even Australia's current population is safe with any significant reduction in rainfall. It seems that recently rains that once came ashore in the south are falling 60 to 100 km off shore.

If they have a solution for that trend, they would be very much wanted in the land of OZ.

  8. No, makes sense to me, and its warmer in Oz
