Question:

Climate in Nepal September/October?

I'll be working in the Kathmandu valley for two months (Sep/Oct) but don't know how to pack. My contact says I should pack for cold weather but my guide book says it will be between 20-30 celsius which sounds really hot. Anyone got a more detailed answer for me? Is it going to be really cold at night and hot in the day maybe? I'm at a loss what type of clothing to pack!!

Thanks

  1. Kathmandu Valley is situated at an altitude of 1336 m so can be cold.

The Kathmandu Valley has a mild climate, ranging from 19-27ºC (67-81ºF) in summer, and 2-20ºC (36-68ºF) in winter. September is autumn so expect something in between.

The width of Nepal is only about 200 km on average, but within this short distance the altitude of the land rises from lowly 60m to all the way up to above 8000m. Hence the weather depends upon the altitude of the place in Nepal.

Climate:The Kathmandu Valley has the pleasant climate most of the year. Although there are forests, snow is unheard of and the monsoons are nowhere near. Between October and March it can become quite cold at night and the days become short, although its sunny and warm between mid-morning and afternoon. In April things start to heat up and there are often storm in the afternoon.

  2. well...the Nepalese peoples think tat its cold..but if u r from a cold country :P like norway or canada..or north europe..or north US then its not cold....its perfect in sep/oct cause then its sun...and not so hot..and not so cold either.. :D

  3. Hi,

September and October are considered as  a festive session in Nepal. ie the major festival like Dashain and Tihar falls under these two months, The weather is perfect and it wont be too cold and too hot. The weather is expected to be quite hot on afternoon and will get cold down on night. So i suggest you to bring some of your jackets along with your T shirts as the weather might be hottor on Afternoon and Colder on evening. I hope this works with you. Thank you for visiting to my motherland- Nepal.

    Regards

    Binod.

  4. Wear layers. During the day, it gets hot and dusty, and the night at altitude can get a bit nippy.

Also, if possible, avoid wearing flashy/trendy/expensive shoes. Even if I bought and wore clothes from Tibetan traders, the locals always noticed my hiking boots or sandals. After a few weeks, I wound up buying cheap flip flops to put an end to the questions.

  5. There is often little cold cover so the night time temperatures are low and the specific heat capacity of the land also means low night time temperatures. You do need to pack for both because the height at which you are can make the difference of up to 20 degrees celsius.

  6. The average temperature in Kathmandu for the month of September is  (max- 27.3 C  min- 18.2 C) and for the month of October (max-  25.9 C   min 13.1 C). The rainfall for September and October are 186.9 and  56.7 millimeter respectively.

So, expect warm afternoons and cool nights. The later part of October could be a little bit cold so having a jacket might be useful to you. The rain might make the temperature during the night a bit cold.
