Question:

Climbing Roses? No blooms?

by  |  earlier

I purchased some rose climbers for my wall and have planted them in large tubs on the patio at the bottom of my garden to cover a garage wall. They have grown really well, but I have not had one rose from them. They are well over 7ft tall now and are healthy and do not have any fly.

When the colder weather comes, do I have to cut them back? If so, how much? Also is it true that if the leaf cluster has a 5 leafs that is great, but if it has 7 it is going back to being a wild rose?

Thanks for your help, much appreciated.

  1. DO YOU GIVE YOUR roses rose food?  they like alot of sun   and water the dirt not the rose plant   we have 30 roses and  come fall here we cut ares back but last year we didnt cut ours back  some died i would cut them back when its time.

  2. If they are in a tub, then the soil may be depleted after providing nourishment for them to grow so tall.  Remember to give them rose food throughout late Spring and Summer.  You shouldn't need to prune climbing roses but you should spread side shoots out in an arch and pin them to the wall.  I hope next year provides blooms for you.  Mine were lovely this year untilt he rain spoiled them.

  3. Roses need at least 6 full hours of sunlight to bloom. They will not bloom if they don't recieve sufficient light.  You said they are on your patio.....is it shaded? Is there a roof over it that blocks the sunlight? Is your patio on the north side?  If the answer to any of these questions is yes then that may be your problem.  Just remember they have to get about 6 hours of direct sunlight per day.

Now if they are getting sufficient light then give them a dose of fertilizer that is high in phosphorus content.  Try a cup of bone meal per plant. That should stimulate flowering.  Do not use fertilizer that has a high nitrogen content (you need some just not a lot). If your fertilizer has a higher nitrogen content than the other three nutrients (phosphorus and potassium) then you will only get a leafy rose with no flowers.

Do not cut back your climbing roses.  The only time you should cut back climbers is in the spring IF there is any winter damage.  Remember the 3 D's of pruning climbers.....Prune if the canes are DEAD, DISEASED, or DAMAGED.

Be sure also that you water your roses well. Roses are heavy drinkers and require and abundance of water.  Do your containers have drainage holes?  If not your should provide a container with good drainage.  Also if possible you should plant your roses in the ground...they will probably fare better and you won't have to worry about drainage or transplanting.

One last thing is that some climbers only bloom on second year wood. I'm not sure how old your rose is but that may also be the problem.  I provided a site below that gives tips on growing climbers.

    Hope this helps!  Good Luck!

  4. Don't prune them!  If this is the first year they've been established, that may be why they didn't bloom this year.  You also may have a nutrient deficiency, you should be using some kind of fertilizer.

  5. Don't worry about the 7 leaf thing...Roses like sun and food.use a systemic rose food every 6 weeks or so.Put banana peels around them several times a year (highest form of natural potash).I'm not sure where you live, but its not to late to cut them back a little  to promote new growth after you fertilize them.

  6. Be sure that they aren't root bound. Fertilize and take real good care of them. You could always go back and trim about 6 inches or go to the first leaf set and cut just above that. It will encourage new growth and therefor new blooms.

Since they aren't blooming I would definetly say that it could be a fertilizer/nutrient deficiancy!
