I am a decent climber and would like to go outdoor climbing. The only places that I have ever been are rock state park and gettysburg. I am willing to travel 45 minutes to an hour. Where would you recommend?

  1. I don't know a whole lot about Maryland except that I've climbed at EarthTreks for bouldering nationals or something

I've heard Carderock overlooks the Potomac River and is generally a peaceful location but can sometimes be packed?

Ask around at your local gym!

  2. There is Sugar loaf mountain state park, and Annapolis Rocks (great climbs but 2 miles of hiking to them) and a little crag down in Ellicot City, it's ok if your close but not worth the drive. I'd definitely pick up a Falcon Guide for Maryland as suggested by Tahoe. I have the MD book (at camp not here) and I know it's got a good selection of climbs in it.

  3. I would suggest getting a guide book - it will show you where the climbing areas are and more importantly you can take it with you and it will show you each route, how much pro is required, ratings, etc.

I like the "Falcon Guide" series of guide books.

    Good Luck
