Clint Newton thinks more players from Super League will move to Australia
While talking to reporters from BBC on Thursday, October 13, Hull Kingston Rovers’ Clint Newton pointed out that players’ were leaving the British league because of the National Rugby League (NRL) Gillette Four Nations in the later part of October.
The player himself has chosen to return to the land down under, which is also his native territory, to play for Penrith Panthers. With Rovers he has accrued 100 appearances in the short stint of four years.
When the player was asked about how easy the decision had been for him, he acknowledged that it was not all that simple for him. He explained that he reached to the conclusion after having many discussions over it with many people.
While talking about the very recent out flux of players from the Super League platform, he said, “I think you're going to lose more and more players to Australia and then the game will severely suffer. That's if the RFL and clubs don't start working towards
making the game better. It came out of the blue but it was one of those opportunities that I couldn't really pass up. With the opportunity to go back to my home country and be closer to my family, it was the right time to move, for the possibilities of playing
in the NRL and life after rugby."
In his view point, the British side should take notice of the signings from the Australian side because it may have a very disturbing effect on Super League in Britain. He himself also speculated that the number is not just going to stop but it will keep
on growing, unless Rugby Football League (RFL) does not take care of it at this stage. According to him, if the games are improved by the clubs and RFL, it will help retain players, instead of losing them to NRL.
The player-drain to Australia has been pointed out by quite a few players earlier as well, and just like what they had foreseen, this seems like a never ending trend, unless some serious measures are taken by RFL.
