Clinton Portis sidelined for four to six weeks
Washington Redskins running back Clinton Portis was sceptical as to whether or not he'd be ready to go for the Redskins upcoming game against the Green Bay Packers, but the official word now is that he will miss more than just the game against the Packers.
He will be out for at least a month due to a groin injury.
A recent MRI indicated that Portis has suffered a third-degree separation to his left groin, as the the muscle had separated from the bone. It is believed that the injury will not require surgery to repair.
"That's disappointing," head coach Mike Shanahan said when revealing the news to the media, "that working so hard, playing so well, that he's got that setback."
Shanahan also pointed out that with Portis out of the lineup, other players will have to step up. One of the players that will have to step it up in Portis' absence is second-year back Ryan Torain, who had already begun to share some of the load coming out
of the backfield.
"When you lose some players during the season, other guys have to step up," Shanahan said of the situation which Torain now finds himself in. "Ryan has got a little playing time, and we'll see what he can do."
Portis is in his ninth season of what has already been an outstanding career, as he has rushed for over 1000 yards in six seasons. Portis is currently only 109 yards shy of 10,000 rushing yards for his career and currently has 195 yards on 49 carries and
two touchdowns.
It is unsure how Torain will handle the increased work load as he has suffered from a variety of injuries since breaking into the league, earning him the injury-prone label.
"Definitely got labeled that," Torain said. "I definitely felt like I had to get that bug off my shoulder and stay healthy. ... Luck wasn't on my side my rookie year."
Torain has rushed for 116 yards on 25 carries with one touchdown so far this season.
