  1. I never used them, I use SPD but I hear they work well.

  2. dont buy eggbeaters they will break, no doubt, buy a set of double-sided pedals that are easy to clean, also i would recomend a pair of Sidi mountain bike shoes, they are comfortable, snug and easy to adjust

  3. I just road 100miles of single track and gravel this past weekend.  I used a pair of campus pedals that had a large, metal platform on one side and an SPD spot on the other.  I wore shoes with recessed SPD cleats.

The advantage was that I could start pedaling without being clipped in, and when my feet started getting sore (hot spots) I could unclip and press down on the pedal with the middle/heel of my foot.  I wasn't as well anchored to the bike (so this was only for flat/boring stretches) but it was great to give my feet a break.

Plus, you can still ride the bike in normal shoes (just take care of your laces first).  A lot of commuters and semi-recreational riders in my town use this setup.

  4. Lotsa good pedals out there.

I like the ones that have an added platform.[636,535]
