Question:

Cloning a Mammoth?

Would this be a good thing? I realize this would take quite a long time, but if it were to be done, what would/could we do with them. Could we breed enough to reintroduce them to Siberia? Would they be a good source of food? Would it be worth the investment?

Is this a leap for science or an abuse?

This is purely a hypothetical question. I am interested in anyone else's thoughts on the whole "clone" issue. It has seemed to fell off the burner so to speak.

Personally, I say go for it. I would also like to see the cloning of an Egyptian Pharaoh, or any other ancient human with DNA that could be used.

Your thoughts?

  1. i do

  2. well for one i think the cloning is a good thing for the food to help people survive cuase you know one day there wont be any food for any body to eat clone the mammoth for the resource that is a great deal

  3. The key to your question is the "with DNA that could be used."

Currently, the DNA specimens are far too degraded to be used successfully.

Even if a specimen or number of specimens of viable DNA could be found, there would be great problems in a venture of this nature.  The prospects of "unlimited meat" using the now unused land masses on the planet to raise animals which would require little labor would require huge amounts of capital to start and then bring to completion.  I am not sure that this would even be profitable.

This is to say nothing about the need for specialized Mammoth wranglers and equipment to deal with the gathering and processing of the product.

As exciting as it might be for some to see an extinct animal brought to life, the political turmoil caused by vegetarians and fundamentalist religious groups who would be just another problem to deal with.

Considering that the American bison could be used over much the same area but has no great commercial use, I would say that this will remain in the field of science speculation.

  4. The only thing I can think of to negatively say about cloning the mammoth or dinosaur etc is why are they extinct?? Maybe the mammoth was an ill tempered beast that hunted the cave men?? and we had to kill it off to live?? :) lol  Seriously I would love to see some ancient beast come to life BUT with some safe guards in place so no Jurassic park kind of thing happening!!

  5. I find it very interesting, cloning an Egyptian Pharaoh or a Mammoth would be almost like stepping back into time....to see what they actually looked like!  Its very exciting to think about but if we cloned a person it would be cruel to make him a lab animal as how could it be any different? II ve been wondering if scientists were going to be able to clone a wooly mammoth...who knows, maybe they have and it's top secret!    :)   That would be really cool!!

  6. Right now elephants are endangered. They require land areas that others want to farm and are hunted for their ivory. As a food source no doubt smaller creatures would produce just as much meat and require much smaller areas. Personally eating mammoth would be like eating whale.

In Iceland two polar bears made it to shore after swimming hundreds of miles from Greenland. They were shot almost as soon as they reached land.

Any mammoth would no doubt spend it's time in a zoo. Letting the end result of cloning and millions of dollars loose on the steppes is unlikely. Worse hunters would no doubt want to make the claim of a unique kill.

Finally, we don't know what killed off the mammoths. Is Siberia the best habitat?

Human cloning is forbidden in most nations. The process involves multiple failures and a host mother would be required to carry the clone to term.

DNA also breaks down over time. That was the plot twist in "Jurassic Park" as frog DNA was used to fill in the dinosaur gaps and suddenly there was a breeding population.

  7. Although I don't think cloning a mammoth is possible I do know for sure that cloning anything is against God's will.

He made things the way they are because He wanted it that way.

Don't monkey around with God's Holy plan.
