Clothes Dryer problem?

My dryer just stopped 5 min into it's cycle. I tried to restart it and it was just completely dead. I then tried to reset the timer k**b and came to realize it was completely stripped. When I pulled it off I saw the inside of the k**b was cracked real bad. I tried to fix it and have had no luck. I wanted to see if it was the k**b that had caused the problem so I took some vice grips and closed it on where the k**b would have went and gave it a turn. It fired right up. My question is can I keep the vice grips on there and just run it like that. My thinking is as long as I mark the grips and set it to where the k**b position was It should just turn as if it was the actual k**b itself on there. Is there any truth to my thinking or is it alot more involved than that. I'm going away in a day and want to finish all the laundry my family and I need for vacation and then I can deal with getting the part when I come back. If that's even what it is. I'm not sure. Any help much appr.

A new k**b should be quite inexpensive.  Try the manufacturer of your dryer or go to www.repairclinic.com to order one.  You can use the vise grips but I wouldn't leave them attached all the time.

The vise grips will work for now but you will want to replace the k**b ASAP.

Any added weight on the shaft for the k**b will cause the inner workings to strip and/or wear sooner than they are designed too.

Check with Lowe's or Home Depot. The k**b will cost you between $5 and $10. Those timers start at about $100.

Why don't you post the type of dryer you have here and on freecycle.com in your area?  Maybe someone has a dead dryer like yours and will give you the k**b.

And I agreed, replace it as soon as you can so the vicegrips don't strip the workings.
