Clothes for tokyo japan this summer?

Im 17 and am going on an exchange to tokyo for the summer so ill be staying with a family and everything. i dont know what is appropriate to pack, are they much more conservative in tokyo than in america? i dont want to look like an american sl*t with my family, so would shorts and tanks be okay to bring with me? also what type of swimsuits should i bring? what should i wear if i go out at night with friends? any tips at all?

It depends on the family, how conservative they will be.  However, I think you should be fine with shorts and tanks.  Just be sure to also pack some t-shirts and shorts that are a bit longer.  It will also be VERY hot in Tokyo in the summer.  The fashions of Tokyo are as diverse as what you see in the US or Europe.  They have many of the same stores.  Check out the H&M site.  I would think their clothing is a good guide for what teens are wearing.  You'll probably pick up a few pieces when you get their to add to your wardrobe.  

    Don't worry about it TOO much.  Take basic pieces than can mix and match and that can be dressed up or down.  For example, a simple denim mini can be worn for sightseeing or going out at night with friends.  A basic v-neck t-shirt can be work with a simple skirt or jeans or capris.
