Question:

Clothing donations best for what charities?

I have clothes to donate - most in excellent shape. However, I am notsure what charity will benefit the most from my donation.

I know some sell donations to thrift stores

some sell in their own thirft stores - with the money being used to help out

while others allow the less fortunate to have first choice or have vouchers to shop in thier thrift stores.

I just do not know which ones do what. What would you suggest would be the best choice? I was thinking that the charity allowing the less fortuate first choice of the clothing would be best.

(last time i donated directly to a shelter and was disapponted because it was as if they could care less about my donation)

THanks for the help!

  1. The other answers here are excellent. The only other suggestion I have is to contact your local referral service for ideas about smaller local charities that can use your donation of used clothing. In my area the United Way operates the referral service. Dial 2-1-1 from any landline phone, not a cell phone, and it connects you to the information and referral line. They keep a list what is needed by local charities. If you do not have a landline phone, then do an internet search for 2-1-1 in your area for the ten-digit number you can use from a cell phone.

  2. salvation army

  3. take them to catholic charities.they will give them to the needy only.

  4. salvation army is the one,i always call them and they pick up from my door.and i think they are one of the good charity place to donate any thing which you do not need any more.though they sort the things out and i heard they sell in the stores and the sales money goes to buy the required stuff needed for the poor or needy people,by the charities.

if you donate your stuff to a reputable charity then they know how to help the needy people and what their needs are.this is only good for the charity goods to trust the reputable charities.but for money donations the best place is to support red cross.they are always there to help the people in every need and money is the only thing that they can use to buy what ever needed for the deserving people beside the clothing.

keep on helping for the good cause by donating goods, your time or by money.god bless you.

  5. I have several places, one of which is specific to San Francisco so it won't help here.

Salvation Army--although I'm not a fan of faith-based industries, they do incredible work in helping those in need, especially in emergency situations.

Goodwill--The money they make from sales goes to training and rehabilitation for the mentally and physically disabled.

I think it's best to give them to an organization that will make money from the sales, rather than who give them directly to people.  However, that being said, see if there is a women's organization in your town that does work to help women get into the work force.  If you have some nice suits and/or business clothing, they would be welcomed.

  6. Personally I donate clothing to organizations that give the clothing to people in need, not sell it.

I donate to local groups that provide clothing to people in active recovery for addictions, homeless groups, veterans groups, a homeless children/teens center and job training programs that provide clothes to people for job interviews. I also donate to a local shelter for batter women with children.

Unfortunately there are probably some in your area and I have no doubt they will appreciate the donations. You might be able to find a suitable organization through a local church or homeless shelter.

  7. I take things to the Goodwill.

  8. If you have some business/professional type clothing & accessories then you should look for a Dress for Success in your area.  It is a great organization.

from the website:  The mission of Dress for Success is to promote the economic independence of disadvantaged women by providing professional attire, a network of support and the career development tools to help women thrive in work and in life.

  9. the two most know ones are salvation army and good will. if not to those organizations, then the american redcross. they're always looking for donationsto give to the fire victims and so forth.

  10. Local churches and other community centers use donated clothing to help victims of home fires, families  in unfortunate situations and other personal local causes.

  11. Volunteer your time that would really help out ....the less fortunate... plus it would help you understand what is needed ..so that the next time you want to donate clothes you will know what to do....

  12. I always donate my cloths to the Women's Drug and Alcohol Treatment center, the Perinatal-Women & Childrens Treatment Center or the Cloths Closet at the Church that helps the Salvation Army vouchers & the Abused Women Shelter. The treatment centers & Abused Women usually come into those facilities with little or no cloths and are grateful for anything they get. Just look up in the phone book, call them first because sometimes they have certain days to accept them.
