Me and a friend recently got interested in MMA, and I am thinking about taking up some Ju-Jitsu classes. Well neway, i recommended the movie Never Back Down to him and he called me and said he and I need to get gloves/mouthpieces/etc. And spar. So i agreed. But im thinking maybe we could do more.

Questions:

1: If we kept it between close friends, and had ppl sign waivers so that its not like were making them do it would it be okay?

2: I was thinking about buying several sets of gloves/head gear/etc, and just having them buy their own mouthpeices, and watever else.

3: Get a few more ppl and set up tournaments, and if we get enough maybe weight classes, etc.

Could this be okay if we made rule and made sure they were followed.

Like no going 100%, or atleast no full on face shots, no crotch shots, etc etc. Any thing else?

  1. Stop you will ge sued for everything you own or your parents own

  2. Probably not realistic. I understand the joys of hanging out with your friends and taking turns clobbering the h**l out of each other. Trying to establish a fight club of sorts would be an invitation for untrained people with big egos and too much testosterone to really hurt one another. Then what? Better to engage in this sort of thing in the context of a class or something under the guidance of an instructor or somebody who is qualified to observe and maintain order if things get out of control because not everyone can always be expected to play by the rules and even those who do sometimes forget to pay attention and need to be reminded. You could referee it, but legally you probably need credentials of some kind plus a whole lot of liability insurance.

  3. The worst thing that could happen is somebody could get lucky and throw their friend down on his head on the basement floor.  The friend could end up with a broken neck and be paralyzed or just lay there and asphyxiate to death in your basement while all your buddies stare.  That's no joke.

Fighting is really fun and generally there is no need for concern if the participants have training, equipment, and a safe place.

If you want to fight, sign up for some classes - if you really want to mix it up you take a grappling class and have your buddy take a striking class.  Teach each other what you learn.  Wrestle around in the back yard - put on protection and box - whatever...but AFTER you learn proper technique.

And DON"T organize any event until you know what it's all about.  You have insurance, state athletic commissions, mat rental, etc. to deal with.  If you really want to pursue it, ask an instructor at a local school if you can help him organize the school's next event.  Maybe you could do a lot of the work and he'll trade you a month of free lessons or entry fees.

Fight but be smart about it, please.  Train first - compete later.

  4. not worth it man, why dont u just all join a local gym mma kind of gym, that has a cage or ring, and fight it out their, u can call it "heavy Sparring "if u want just buy safty training mma gloves, heavy shins pads , and head gear and go for it, accidents happen all the time people get cut, brused acidentlay fall and brake something, **** happens, ur best bet is to go to a gym sign up as a member and use the time which most gyms set aside for OPEN GYM or OPEN MAT to have ur little tournements,

bro if ur gona do this be smart get all the saftey equipment you can, Wrap ur hands before u fight , and dont start ur own lil fight club  someone is gona get hurt and then ur gona be screwed

  5. Waivers are not worth the paper they're written on.

If someone is injured or killed, you will be liable as the organizer of the event. Since you won't be able to get insurance, any legal costs and penalties from litigation will be on you specifically. If you involve your uncle in any way, he will also draw liability.

    Not a good idea.

  6. Dude...geeze.....man.......A movie caused all this?  I heard that movie sucked and was about little rich "Ivy League" kids with no real jobs.  Is that how you want to spend your life?  Vain-shallow and unimportant to the world?  You don't just wake up one day and say to your self, "I want to be a Mixed Martial Artist".  .......... wow man I'm stumped by society's way of thinking .... I'm so pissed right now I can't even answer this question without going slick off.

  7. What state do you live in? That will set what you can and can't do.  In Iowa, if the fights are between to consenting adults(18 or older) and are of sound mind and not in public you can beat each other.  If one part is not consenting then it's assault.  Anyone under 18 if a parent knows about the parents can be in trouble as well. Waivers only work if you have liability insurance.  The movie never back down, if the cops were on to it, it would never happen.  you don't seem knowledgable about the sport in the first place so how would you ref it?  I use to wrestle and had my neck broken in a match at a state tourney. Just don't do and go to a real place to fight.  There are several organizations that will allow you spare with properly.  Most good sparing gloves are about $60 a piece, headgear can be as cheap as $45 and high as $75. Plus I would seriously invest in to skin cleaners to fight skin disease and that mat cleaners that can go as $300 a case.

  8. This is the dumbest question so far on Y!A. Your telling us that you have NO martial arts experience, only saw a crappy *** movie, and you think you can spar? safely ? you have to be some sort of dumb, middle class, teen ager who's seen to many movies. dont try it at all, no matter what waver you get, youll still be held responsible. go get some boxing lessons first or something.
