Clubs with history? ?

we seem now to be going into this club has more history than another.

history of winning or just being a club?

go back to late 60's and 70's - LEEDS UTD.

all these clubs have history surely, whether they have won trophies or not. Not one single club be it from Liverpool Utd Arsenal or Chelsea has any more right to be there than say Stoke. No team can keep living on past glories. Anyone else out there just looking fwd to some good football . - win or lose? Thoughts please

  1. It's true, the league you are in shows your history, the position you finish in defines your current ability.

Just look at Preston North End, Huddersfield and Leeds as what can happen if you rest on your laurels.

  2. *standing ovation*

what ppl fail to realize is history starts with one day, one step forward United did not start out dominating they had to build it up they were blank like everyone else so if City for instance or any other club decides enough is enough and they want to become a big team and make "history" then so be it sure United and so on are more successful and have better history than say City but history is made over time and City should be commended for trying to become one of the big boys

  3. It's the way you make history which counts, yeh sure John has pointed out that history is made all the time and every club can open a chapter but the way it is done is paramount. Man Utd's dominance started from scratch without billions made from oil.

  4. Past glory is important for clubs, but is of little relevance as to who wins this year - and the biggest pub bores are the ones who when faced with defeat go on about how it used to be. Yes in history Leeds, Chelsea, Fulham, Orient, Liverpool, Man U, Arsenal, Sheff Wed and many other clubs have been really good and won a few things. To count your club as important you need a lot of support and ability to bring in money - this ability to bring in money is usually due to a lot of support which often comes from past glory - but now it sometimes only takes a single owner to bring the money in.

Enjoy any success you have while you can - just takes one duff Chairman to send your club spiraling out of control for years - step forward fans of Leeds (me), Sheff Wed, Notts Forest, Luton, Northampton, Swindon, Leicester, Watford - apologies for all the clubs I've missed, but basically any team that has been in administration in the last 10 or 15 years should be included as despite the wealth in the game, some people should never be trusted with money. Who will be next - presumably anyone spending above their historical means - my money would be on anyone gambling on qualification for Europe (West Ham, Spurs, Portsmouth maybe) or anyone gambling on reaching the premier league (Cardiff probably springs to mind quickest for spending money as if they are already in the premier league).

  5. win or lose, on the booze

  6. History to me is quite an important part of football. It defines which clubs are great i.e Manchester United, Real Madrid, and which clubs are phonies with a lot of recent money i.e Chelsea, Man City. Maybe 40 years down the line i will rate Chelsea as a great club but looking at their history to me they're a mediocre side that won the lottery.

That being said, I agree with you in saying that Leeds, Forest etc cannot claim they are a good club because of history. As I history is quite important as it defines what club can be truely GREAT, but the present is far, far, far more important than history.

  7. Only Chelsea fans say that because they have no history.

History is very important because it shows who are the great teams. Funny you mention Arsenal, because we have a better history than Chelsea. 13 League titles compared to your puny 3. 11 FA Cups compared to your negliable amount. We have been one of the big boys in the league throughout history and have and will always be the pride of London, not some crappy bought Chelsea team with no history.

"any explanation to why some clubs are phonies? seem to remember seeing chelsea pick up a cup in 1970 - not historical enough. or is it because its a london club???"

<<<<< I seem to remember Arsenal winning 10 Leage Titles from their start to 1998. This is 9 more than Chelsea.
