My son will be one in a few weeks, and right now I feel like we are behind on the feeding thing. Right now his diet consists of a couple bottles a day and then jarred baby food. Am I supposed to be feeding him table food? He has only 4 teeth so Im nervous. But then I see other parents feeding their one year olds normal adult food! I feel like i am behind. What should his diet be every day? What foods should I feed him?

  1. You would be surprised at what he will be able to eat with those 4 teeth. Just cut everything up really really small. Try the stage 3 foord first to get him used to the chunks. We started our daughter on our food at about 10 months when she decided she didn't like the jarred food anymore. Good luck!

  2. Does your pediatrician talk to you about your childs diet?  I think it's to each its own.  to give you an idea though, my son is 6 mths old, he has 5 serving of breast milk a day and three jars of homemade baby food and is thriving.  Next month I plan on starting him with the Gerber graduates puffs, they melt away in the mouth.

  3. Lola is 13 months old now and has been having table food since 10 months. My pediatrician said to have her off of bottles by one year old (though it depends on the pediatrician). I would try introducing table food now, slowly. One meal at a time. Start with dinner, once he can eat enough table food to fill him up at dinner start to introduce it at lunch.

  4. First, each child is different and progress at different speeds. My daughter is 11 months old with 4 teeth almost 5 and eats; chicken, crackers, gerber cookies, gummy fruit snacks, animal crackers, oranges, apples and the list goes on and on. Try it and see how he likes it. Let him be the judge. He'll let you know when hes ready(like pointing to your food when you eat dinner, or fussing if you wont let him eat any of yours).

  5. My son is 9 months and has been on complete table food for 2 months now (the doc said he eats like a 15 month old).  He has 2 teeth.  I don't give him Peanut butter, honey or chocolate, everything else he eats.

I give him whatever we eat but I try to give him more fruits and veggies and i watch his sodium intake.  Babies should have about 700mg of sodium a day.  Some of the gerber meals for toddler have 450 or so in one meal!  I do keep a few on hand in case I'm in a pinch but try to stay away from them.

Here's a sample day of his meals:

bfast  ---- toast with cream cheese and banana, 4 oz formula

lunch----- ground hamburger, peas, blueberries, cheerios

    dinner----chicken, broccoli, carrots, strawberries, biscuit

    bedtime---6 oz formula

He also snacks a few times a day.  I try to give a fruit at bfast, a fruit and veggie at lunch, 2 veggies and a fruit at dinner.  He takes very little formula but the doc said given his eating habits its ok.  Just cut everything up little.

  6. You can continue feeding him jar food, but maybe move up to the chunky stuff.  Maybe you could introduce one "grown up" food at a meal.  Say, sliced bananas, or maybe small pieces of strawberries.  Nothing that is too hard to chew, but stuff that will more likely melt in his mouth.  You're not behind.  Some children just get more teeth earlier and are better able to chew.  Stay away from stuff like hotdogs and chips.  He could easily choke on those.

  7. my suggestion is to completley stop the baby food. you have to start introducing him to variety or else you'll have a problem later on. pasta is the key.cook small pastas and put alittle butter and he will love that. yogurts, puddings, goldfish. i could go on forever. don't be nervous. he wont choke and then he will sense your nervous and get scared. be as calm as you can when he's eating. my son was 1 and he was eating hamburgers. anyway mash things up at first if your nervous. try peas and those carrots that are cooked too! he'll be so happy with his new foods AWH!

  8. those gerber melty things could work.

    bananas are awesome.....

  9. Well i would start simple. Cut up food in small bites until you know what he/she can handle. The more they get used to chewing the more types of food you can give.

  10. it's ok to continue feeding him baby food as long as it's not stage one but he should be off the bottle at one. you could try some little en-tree's. my son loved them when he was a baby.
