Clutch spring keeps coming undone, starter won't...

Question

I've put 3 clutch springs in - they come undone almost immediately. Clutch itself appears to be in satisfactory condition.Pulling the starter cord, more often than not nothing engages. At best I'll get one stroke with compression.
