Clyde Drexler believes a new starting line-up is the way to go for the Phoenix Suns – NBA News
With the departure of Steve Nash in the off-season to the Los Angeles Lakers, the Phoenix Suns knew that they had a long road to travel before they could return to dominance in the Western Conference.
With Nash gone, the Suns have now lost the face of the franchise and the guy who came to define the brand of basketball Phoenix played on the court. It is a huge transition to make and a massive rebuilding effort for the team is
on the cards.
Having said that, Phoenix have done a surprisingly good job recruiting a pool of talent for next season. Their new acquisitions will perhaps surprise many in the league and help them fare better in the upcoming season than analysts
are predicting. Clyde Drexler seems to agree with that view point.
Drexler was attending the Jerry Colangelo Basketball Hall of Fame Golf Classic in Litchfield Park last week where he talked to Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic regarding the future of the Suns and his expectations for this coming
season.
“They’ve got a real team now. They can really play. You already got (Marcin) Gortat. Now, you got (Luis) Scola. You got (Goran) Dragic. And you got (Michael) Beasley. You’ve got three new starters coming in who can play,” said
Drexler.
The Suns had a good run of luck in the off-season, when the Houston Rockets decided to let go their sensational point guard Goran Dragic and signed former New York Knicks point guard Jeremy Lin. Phoenix was quick to reach out to
their former back up for Steve Nash, and signed him on for the next season.
In addition to that, Houston amnestied their forward Luis Scola in order to clear cap space to make a run for landing Dwight Howard. Phoenix picked up Scola off amnesty waivers, and will start him next season in the front court.
This gives the Suns a respectable starting line-up that will feature Scola, Dragic, Michael Beasley and Marcin Gortat. With that kind of a starting roster, the Suns can perhaps make the transition and rebuilding faster than many
are anticipating.
“Are you kidding me? If they don’t get the fourth or fifth playoff spot, I’m not standing before you. They’re big. They’re athletic. They know how to play,” said Drexler when Coro implied that the Suns were expected to finish 14th
or 15th in the Western Conference next season.
