For a single substance at atmospheric pressure, classify the following as describing a spontaneous, nonspontaneous, or equilibrium process.

(1)liquid and gas together at the boiling point with no net condensation or vaporization

(2)gas condensing above its condensation point

(3)solid and liquid together at the melting point with no net freezing or melting

(4)gas condensing below its condensation point

(5)liquid vaporizing above its boiling point

(6)liquid freezing below its freezing point

(7)liquid freezing above its freezing point

(8)solid melting above its melting point

(9)liquid vaporizing below its boiling point

(10)solid melting below its melting point

  1. spontaneous, think of water flow down hill, you do not need to help it, it will just run down. That is spontaneous.

nonspontaneous, water does not boil by itself, we have to put a big flame underneath it to make it happen. That is nonspontaneous.

Equilibrium, think of it as a parking lot that is full, with people entering and exiting both at the same time, but the number of people that comes in and the number of people  that goes out are exactly the same,  so is you ought to count the # of cars in the lot, it will be the same, but you just simply counting different cars.

I recommend you to attemp the questions first, and then check it with my answers. It works much better for you that way. :)

    With that said,

    1. equilibrium, same # goes into vapor from liquid as liquid goes into vapor.

    2. Gas condense when it is cooled down, so if it is condensing when heated (above its condensation point), it can't be water goes down hill, so non-spontaneous.

    3. same as 1,

    4. Gas condense below condensation point, that is pretty nature, so spontaneous

    5. liquid naturally vaperize above its boiling point, spontaneous

    6. liquid naturally freezes if the temperature is lower than freezing point, so spontaneous

    7. liquid do not freeze in hot summer, non-spontaneous

    8. ice melt when temp is high, so spontaneous

    9. liquid prefer to become vapor above boiling point, so non-spontaneous.

    10. ice do not melt if the temperature is freezing, so non-spontaneous.

  2. 1)liquid and gas together at the boiling point with no net condensation or vaporization = E

(2)gas condensing above its condensation point = N

(3)solid and liquid together at the melting point with no net freezing or melting = E

(4)gas condensing below its condensation point = S

(5)liquid vaporizing above its boiling point = S

(6)liquid freezing below its freezing point = S

(7)liquid freezing above its freezing point = N

(8)solid melting above its melting point = S

(9)liquid vaporizing below its boiling point = N

(10)solid melting below its melting point = N
