Co-favourites heat up the competition at Newcastle
A trio of co-favourites were the major draw during this morning’s races at the Newcastle Greyhound Stadium. Shaws Black, Canny Comic, and Yeneed Style were all billed as 3-1 favourites to win the first race of the day. Two of them finished atop the standings, while the third one failed to crack the top three.
Shaws Black was the winner of the first race, finishing the race with a time of 30.30. He led first to third, and came back again to pick up the victory. Fellow co-favourite Canny Comic was a shoulder’s length behind Shaws Black with an identical time of 30.30.
Finishing a neck behind second place was Bushwalker (10-1), who ran on to finish the race in 30.33. A Ken Ruth placed fourth in 30.41, which put her out of the top three by only a single length.
Yeneed Style, the third co-favourite, did not have enough style to win this race. He took fifth place in 30.42, placing him a head behind A Ken Ruth. The sixth and final spot was claimed by Goodview Blue (7-2). His finishing time of 30.48 was ¾ lengths behind fifth place.
Stripes Isklar was chosen as the 9-4 favourite to win the next race, but despite having a clear run, he finished in last place. The win went to Sylvan Choice, who was ranked as an 8-1 long shot before the race. He soon led after being released from trap two, and completed the race with a good time of 30.25.
Toosey Angel (3-1) managed a second-place finish in 30.41. This put her two lengths out of the top position in this race. Mistley Manor (3-1) cruised to a 30.55 finish with a clear run. She was 1¾ lengths behind Toosey Angel.
In fourth place was Northwest Madam (5-1), who also had a clear run. Her 30.67 finish was 1½ lengths behind Mistley Manor. Black Elagance (7-2) finished in fifth place with a time of 30.75. His clear run separated him from fourth place by just one length.
Pre-race favourite Stripes Isklar locked up the last spot in 30.83. He missed out on a fifth-place finish by 1 length. Stripes Isklar’s record at Newcastle has been full of ups and downs. Since he made his debut on 4 December 2009, he has only put up four first-place finishes in his career.
Greyhound racing at Newcastle Greyhound Stadium resumes on Thursday 9 September. The doors open at 18:00, and the first race of the evening gets underway at 18:38.
