Co-favourites race to big finish at Yarmouth
The 462m races at Yarmouth Stadium last night gave racing fans a lot to talk about. The fans were buzzing with anticipation, and the racers all turned in some very strong performances on the 13-race card.
Chicago Nights was billed as the 11-4 favourite to win the first race on the card, but he placed third. The victory went to Sporting Rocket (3-1), who held an early pace out of trap two. He proceeded to lead fourth, and blasted off to a great win in 28.61 seconds.
Matching Sporting Rocket’s time of 28.61 was Tullowmac Blaze, who was just a shoulder’s length behind the champion. Pre-race favourite Chicago nights took third in 28.87 to put himself 3¼ lengths out of second place. Daves Duke (7-2) came in fourth place 2 lengths behind Chicago Nights with a 29.03 finish.
The fifth-place dog was Midian Causeway (4-1), who finished the race in 29.17, 1¾ lengths behind the fourth position. Battlewarrior claimed the number six spot by finishing in 29.29, which was 1½ lengths behind Midian Causeway.
The next race was one of the highlights of the evening, as it featured four co-favourites; a rarity in this sport. Each one was staked with 3-1 odds to win before the race, but it was Rent Relief who came out on top. When he emerged from trap four, he held an early pace, and soon led the sprint to finish line. His finishing time of 28.48 gave him the victory.
Hartwood Jac laid claim on second place with his 28.78 finish. This put him 3¾ lengths out of the top spot. Behind him by 1¾ lengths was third-place finisher Longrange Beth, who finished the race in 28.92. Fourth place went to Zigzag Honcho, the last of the co-favourites. His time of 28.98 separated him from third place by only ¾ lengths.
The bottom two positions were both won by a head’s length. Cloncunny Okee (5-1) finished in 28.99 to lock up fifth place. He bumped first, and challenged and baulked at third. Centenarys Solas (5-1), checked in with a time of 29.00 for a last-place finish. It was a disappointing finish for Centenarys Solas, whose best results were a trio of wins when he began his career in July 2009.
The next racing night at Yarmouth will be held on Wednesday 8 September with a 13-race card. The first race of the night is slated to begin at 18:33.
