Co-favourites sizzle and fizzle in A8 race at Perry Barr
There is an old adage that states that good things come in threes. The Three Musketeers are one example that everyone one is familiar with. However, in the world of 480m greyhound racing,
there are some good threes as well.
Perry Barr Greyhound stadium featured a trio of co-favourites in the A8 race that began today’s 12-race card. Lynnwood Jake, Jaydees Champ, and Coolcholly Pio were all staked as 5-2 favourites
to win, but only one of these three dogs was the victor in this race. That honour went to Lynnwood Jake, who held an early pace from trap four, and always led en route to a 29.76 second finish to claim first place.
Finishing in second place was Effernogue Dusty (5-1), whose 29.94 finish was 2¼ lengths behind the winner. Some crowding at the quarter mark cost her the victory. Jaydees Champ, another
of the co-favourites, ran on to lay claim on third place. He matched Effernogue Dusty’s time of 29.94, missing out on second place by a shoulder’s length.
Highfire Bill’s (6-1) 30.04 finish was 1¼ lengths out of the top three, and good enough for fourth place. Finishing ¾ lengths behing him was Monkspath Mirage (5-1), who finished the race
in 30.10 to take fifth place. The bottom spot belonged to Coolcholly Pio, the third co-favourite. He crowded the quarter to finish in 30.28, which was 2¼ lengths behind fifth place.
The A4 race that followed also featured multiple favourites. Sawpit Samurai and Rathcrea Sal were both 2-1 joint favourites coming into this race, with Sawpit Samurai emerging as the winner.
A bounding start gave him an early pace, and he always led the pack to place first with an excellent finishing time of 29.05.
Fast Fit Lad (9-4) was both fast and fit on the way to a second-place finish. He completed the race in 29.25, which was 2½ lengths behind the winning racer.
Closing out the top three was Harlenas Zena (5-1), who finished 3¼ lengths behind second place with a time of 29.51. Rainham Nicky (10-1) was 2¾ lengths behind Harlenas Zena to place fourth
in 29.73.
Crowding and bumping at first cost Rathcrea Sal, the other joint favourite, a win today. She took fifth place in 29.81, finishing a single length out of fourth place. Aldworth Clocker,
the 20-1 long shot, finished in sixth place with a time of 30.51. A distance of 8¾ lengths separated him from finishing fifth.
Favourites may come and go, but the racing action at Perry Barr Stadium is ongoing. The races continue on Friday 24 September at 19:25.
