Co-pay assistance for disabled child?

I am a mother to a beautiful 15 month old little girl who is severely disabled. She has major neurological issues and wasn't expected to survive more than a month after she was born. She had severe hydrocephalus and was shunted. But her main problem, is that the majority of her brain was either damaged or did not form properly. It may have been a stroke or an infection, no one knows for sure. But the severity of her condition requires me to stay at home with her. My husband works full time, but I am unable to. My question is, where do I look for assistance? We have insurance, but the co pays are piling up. She has physical and occupational therapies weekly. (5 therapies a week.) Her medication co pays are also adding up. Everything we have applied for, we have been turned down because my husband makes too much money. I just find it so hard to believe that $45,000 per year for a family of 3, with the medical bills we have... is too much money. Every hospitalization we are forced to rack up more credit card debt. I am just finally at a breaking point. I dont know where else to turn or where I can find the help I need. I live in NH so if there are any state specific services you know of, please let me know.

  1. If you feel you are denied every possible income source.Think about legally losing your husbands income by  losing the marriage license. and keep the autos in his name and put any  $ in a box.( But of course stay together.)Then re -apply.

  2. Contact the nearest Parent Training and Information Center (PTI). They should be able to direct you to various sources.

  3. If  your child has all these problems you can get a disability check for her. Go to the social security/disability office with all your records and you will get help. It may take a while to get it started, but once you get a check it will go back to the date you applied. Go now get this done. They are not going to knock at your door and ask if you need assistance. You will qualify.

  4. The Early Intervention Program that the one responder mention, is a excellent program. They provide services until the age of three and will help you find other programs, once she turns three.

I also have a son that requires special services, I have found that one of the best sources of information concerning services are other parents. Talk with some of the parents and therapist, they might be aware of programs that will be helpful.

I hope that you find the resources you need.

  5. you need to appeal the SSI

see if she is eligible for medicaid

are you involved in Early Intervention---in my state OT, PT, Speech and developmental intervention would be provided at NO cost to you based on your income..

call the state dept of disability services--my state has a catastrophic childrens illness fund

also contact the division of developmental disabilities--tehy may have some resources..

for prescriptions---contact the partnership for prescription assistance (ppa.org0--i don't know if you are eligible since you have insurance, but it is worth a try

  6. You have applied for SSI for her? You have provided to them the unpaid/ or receipts for copays and other expenses? Your income is just over the allowable amount - but you should be able to deduct the medical expenses that are not covered by your insurance.

    1. Most people are turned down the first time. Appeal or reapply.

    2. Find out the value of your vehicles. One of them is exempt from counting. Any of its value over 2,000 makes you in eligible for benefits. Sell your car and buy one valued at 2,000 or less OR find a used sales dealer who will value you at 2,000 or less and demonstrate proof of its worth.

    3. Get your doctor to write a letter that says it is medically imperative that you have a car to use while your husband is at work because of the nature of your child's disability.

    4. Forget about the idea of divorce. Social Security is onto people divorcing just to get benefits and it does not work.
