I bought a car a couple of months ago and my step father cosigned for it. Recently we have started having disagreements. His name is the first on the title. If i were to leave and take the car could he report the car stolen or in anyway prevent me from taking the car? I am over eighteen by the way.

  1. No he cannot take the car. The only way he can take the car is if the car is fully in his name which would legally make the car his. As long as you make your payments there should be no reason for him to take the car. Just know this if or when something is taken from us God is just setting us up to get something better........ Be blessed...

  2. NO HE CAN NOT REPORT THE CAR STOLEN OR FILE CHARGES FOR UNAUTHORIZED USE OF A MOTOR VEHICLE. EVEN IF THE CAR WAS SOLELY IN HIS NAME, BEING YOU ARE PROBABLY LISTED AS A DRIVER ON THE INSURANCE HE STILL COULD NOT FILE THE CHARGES.

IN A COURT OF LAW BEING BOTH YOU AND YOUR STEP FATHER ARE ON THE TITLE YOU BOTH ARE ENTITLED TO THE CAR EQUALLY.

THE ONE THING YOUR NEED TO REMEMBER (AND YOU WONT LIKE THIS) IS WITHOUT HIM YOU WOULD NOT HAVE THE CAR. SO KEEP THIS IN MIND.

  3. hey man, c**p happens and i'm sorry you and your step dad are having problems. you need to find out if your title reads "and"; "or"; "and/or". if it's "and" he has a legal right to the car and may report it stolen, but so do you, meaning when it goes to court they will settle it just like a divorce. if it's the other 2 options he can't say that you stole it. I would look into rewriting/refinancing the car to get it out of his name. good luck.

  4. first of all, if your step dad was cool enought to cosign for you and put his credit on the line for you, that means he loves and trust you. i'm sure he's not going to try and s***w you.

but remember his good credit  which he's worked so hard at keep is on the line for you. if you skip payment or get really behind or don't make your payments, his good credit is going to be screwed bad. and they will try to go after both you and him for the money you still owe on the car.  it's much easier to s***w up your credit than it is to built it up and he is responsible too for the balance you still owe.

as far as him having the right to take it away,  the vehicle is registered in both your names and that means both of you own it equally.

you're going to have to work that part out with him. like i said he was loving and trusting enough to help you; i think if you don't try and s***w up his credit, he won't try to take that car away.  his intentions is not to own your car. if he really wanted a car he probably wouldn't have picked the one you picked anyway.

  5. if he wanted to yes his name is first so its his car then yours... not smart thing man.... never have two names on a car
