Question:

Co-workers asking me to work late?

I work as a cashier in a grocery store and I have a set schedule because I go to school. At the moment I'm not in school, (it starts soon though) but I am also studying to take the CLEP tests. Either way I am still very busy with family/life and luckily my managers have been very accommodating. However, because I have the "easiest" schedule, my co-workers are constantly asking me if I can stay until 11 (when we close) and I don't like to because I like my schedule the way it is and I don't feel safe working until 11 because you're left by yourself. (The manager is around, but not up at the front all the time.) What can I tell them in a polite way to stop asking me if I can stay late unless I am scheduled to work that late?

  1. Let your manager know first... Then just let your co-workers know, politely, that with your schedule and school needs, that its extremely difficult for you to work late. One suggestion though, coming from a current manager, is you might want to be willing to work late once every other week, just to make sure there aren't any hard feelings/ people feeling like you're getting special treatment.. good luck!

  2. your co-workers have no business asking you to stay late........

the only ones who should be making this request or making any changes to the schedule are management. if a co-worker ask you simply and politely say NO. as long as management is comfortable with your schedule and your performance that is all that matters. if this continues to happen speak to a manager about it and ask for assistance.

  3. Just say no . ....you need to stand up for yourself ... just tell them you're busy and can't stay ... they'll stop asking if you're always too busy .
