Coach Gary Kubiak rues Houston Texans' red-zone difficulties – NFL News
Coach Gary Kubiak is not content with overall Houston Texans’ efforts in the preseason opener, marking the team committed a number of flaws during the game and pinpointing the lost opportunities in the red zone especially to be the most regrettable point.
Texans beat the Carolina Panthers 26-13, thanks to the superb form shown by their defence, but the coach said there is a lot work to be done in certain areas to prevent loss of point-scoring opportunities in the future.
He said:
"I thought we had some opportunities to make some plays. The field gets smaller down there, you've got to make the little plays. It's something we've been working really hard on in practice. The key to us in the red zone is running the ball well. Overall,
if we play better in the red zone, there are a lot more points."
The team is coming out into the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season as Super Bowl contenders and they in the game against Panthers did not look like the team heading to the title game. Gary admitted there was always a possibility of making mistakes
but insisted there was really “some ugly” plays.
While citing fumbles of Arian Foster, he said:
"Arian knows he's got to hang onto the ball. I don't have to tell him that. I do tell him on a regular basis, but he knows that."
Quarterback Matt Schaub, who returned to the side after lapse of more than half a year due to foot injury, also looked a bit shaky. He threw an interception much to the displeasure of the coach. He, however, was expected to make a few mistakes because of
having remained out of the real game challenges for a long period.
It was nevertheless a good start for the team. They have started this season campaign on a positive note and the win should boost their confidence and hopes of progressing through to new heights this year.
Also, it is rather encouraging that the team’s defence remains as formidable as it was last year, and credit of the strong defensive show-off no doubt goes to defensive coordinator Wade Phillips.
