Coach Mike Mularkey expects CB Rashean Mathis for Minnesota Vikings' game – NFL News
Jacksonville Jaguars coach Mike Mularkey said they expect cornerback Rashean Mathis’ availability in the season’s opening game against the Minnesota Vikings this Sunday.
Rashean is returning from a knee surgery and the coach is upbeat about his fitness level and chances to be a part of the side when they take on the Vikings in the road game to mark opening of the season.
His return should come as welcome news for the team as they are likely to head to Minnesota without cornerback Derek Cox, who is out of the side with a lingering hamstring injury. Derek was injured in the preseason’s opening game and has been in the recovery
process since then.
The coach said there is a little hope that Cox is going to make it to the season opener. As a matter of fact, he said, the player is yet to hit the field for any workout since being ousted in the mid of last month.
With Cox’s situation very much uncertain, Mularkey said they will likely place CB Will Middleton to be their starter opposite to Aaron Ross.
Although the coach did not confirm status of other defensive players i.e. guard Uche Nwaneri, who is out of the team with an injured ankle, he said the player might be available for the forthcoming game.
The coach has set hopes of his return to practice by this Wednesday, and if it happens there is a probability he will be a part of the side well in time for the weekend’s game.
Meanwhile, the Jaguars have met a severe blow to recently signed tight end Brett Brackett. The defensive player is reported to have suffered a season-ending knee injury.
Brett's signing had taken place as compensation for absence of tight ends Matt Veldman and Zach Miller to an extent, but unfortunately he could prove a little help for the team before ending up on the sidelines with a serious knee injury in his first-ever
practice session with the team on Monday.
Zach and Matt have already been placed on the injured reserve (IR) list, and with another tight end gone, the Jaguars’ defence situation depicts a pathetic picture.
