Coach Mike Munchak credits success of Tennessee Titans defence to DC Jerry Gray – NFL News
Irrespective of the question how badly the Tennessee Titans have done overall in the season, coach Mike Munchak is pleased to note how strongly they have rebounded defensively after the worst start.
At start of the season, the Titans allowed more points than any other team in the league, but they have consistently performed well since end of the first quarter of the season.
Now the team ranks among top five defences in the league in six categories respectively, although conceding huge 181 points in first five games still makes them worst defence on the league’s standings chart.
It was nevertheless a remarkable comeback by the team’s defence in overall subdued performance, which has knocked them down at 5-9 on the league’s chart until 14th game of the season.
Coach Munchak has credited the team’s overall defence's progression to hard work of defensive coordinator Jerry Gray. He said Gray should be happy how well the defensive line has responded to his effort at the right time.
The coach said:
"We knew it wasn't all the defence. It was turnovers, it was the offence. It was a lot of things that were leading to statistically things looking worse than they were. We obviously weren't playing as well as we needed to play on either side of the ball."
According to the coach, the team’s defensive achievement is even more significant that they were without defence captain Colin McCarthy at the middle linebacker position for last three successive games. He suffered a concussion and still has been through
symptoms, which can possibly cost him rest of the season, with only two more games to go.
If the Titans are able to pull off victories in the remaining two games of the season, they might have some consolation in comparison with their previous season’s record of 9-7, although it might not be that convincing for owner Bud Adams to spare some officials
and players in an imminent postseason cleansing drive.
He has still let the team be on an informal notice over their poor showing in the season and it remains to be seen how far he will go with his rebuilding drive that could cost career of some officials, including coaches and players in Tennessee.
