Coach Mike Munchak down plays Chris Johnson run controversy – NFL News
Tennessee Titans' coach Mike Munchak has played down their running back Chris Johnson controversy saying Johnson was and remains Titans' starter.
Munchak was of the view that he felt that the player would be working ever harder with his game plan especially in the situation where his contract extension was generating high expectations.
He said that running back would continue to remain their starter with Javon Ringer as backup. Ringer will continue to play with the no of carries in each game.
"He's handling the situation where expectations are so high I don't know how he could ... unless we're running for 200 yards a game," Munchak said."There's going to be people questioning what he's doing just because he's paid how
he is and he's perceived to be one of the top backs in the league, so people expect an awful lot from him every time he steps on the field. When you come short of that and as a team we struggle, everyone's trying to figure out what's wrong. Something must
be wrong."
Johnson meanwhile continued to build on his success in the club, while his performance has generated an interest and expectations as his contract nears expiration.
The player is leading the National Football League (NFL) with his performance. He was one of the leading players in NFL in rushing in the seasons of 2009 and 2010. He had become the sixth man in the history of the American football
league to have run for more than 2000 yards, which he achieved in the year 2009. He then had notched up 24 100-yard rushing in the season.
Since signing extension of his contract worth $53 million, he has topped 100 yards only once. However the player insisted that there was nothing wrong with his speed and that he was fine and fit for play.
However, critics believe that the question would continue to arise until the Titans fix their game. They are 4-3 in the current season. Their run is 64.3 to 68.9 on average per game. It was first time that they had recorded 96
yards on average against Indianapolis. However, they are still trailing their nearest rival Seattle Seahawks 77.7 yards per game.
In view of their performance the pressure is now increasing on Johnson as well as the Titans. The build up to get him (Chris Johnson) increase his run with each passing week is increasing. The increase in the pressure on him is
also with view of a fact that Ringer has more yards, 60 average, that his Johnson's average 34. The 34 or below run is achieved by him four times in the current seasons. This is providing the observers food for thought and opportunity to question his run.
Despite the raised eyebrows about Johnson’s performance, Munchak said that there was no plan to out the carries between the running back.
