Coach Mike Winkeljohn assures Jones will be as good as Silva soon – UFC News
Strike coach Mike Winkeljohn has assured fans that light heavyweight champion Jon Jones will reach the level of middleweight champion Anderson Silva, in terms of accurate striking.
“Since he's come to camp, I'm real blessed that this young man listens and he went from being mostly a wrestler to now he's turning over to becoming a great striker in the division,” said Mike who is apparently quite happy with Jones being under his guidance.
“He's almost there, he's almost to that Anderson Silva place where he is going to start getting those one punch and one kick knockouts. Just wait, you haven't seen anything yet,” he added.
It should be noted here that while Anderson Silva is a master at accurate striking, Jon Jones uses the long reach of his elbows and knees to get his opponents down. Surely, Jones is not yet at the level where Silva stands but many are hoping that he would
soon be.
Even Anderson Silva believes Jones is his younger version. Unlike Silva, Jones is not an undefeated fighter but he surely, he is a tyrant in his division.
Jon Jones fought Vitor Belfort at Ufc 152, defeating the ‘old-school fighter’. However, Jones arm was severely damaged by Belfort’s armbar submission. Right now, the light heavyweight champion is in rehabilitation. According to reports, he needs at least
three months to completely recover from the injury.
Once recovered, Jones will face The American Gangster Chael Sonnen at The Ultimate Fighter season 17. Jones will be defending his title against Sonnen, who will be making his light heavyweight comeback. It should be noted here that the fight has already
garnered enough criticism from other fighters and analysts, as according to them Sonnen is not worth of the title shot.
Jones is not afraid of Sonnen, as he believes The American Gangster is all about trash-talking and nothing more.
“I totally agree and I'm not sitting here saying that I wouldn't take the fight, I would take the fight in a heartbeat,” said Jones earlier this month regarding the fight against Sonnen, believing he would defeat the former middleweight contender easily.
