Coach Pat Shurmur snubs future’s talk until Cleveland Browns done with season – NFL News
Cleveland Browns coach Pat Shurmur has refused to talk his future with or without the Browns, saying he is happy with the way the team has progressed most recently, but at the same time admitted they still have a long way to go as far as rebuilding of the
unit is concerned.
Shurmur in his recent post-game remarks was not happy to be asked about his future with the Browns, or even without them, given the team has been sold to the new owner Jimmy Haslam.
The coach said:
"I don't want to talk about my future, OK. I'm trying to make this the best Monday of the year, and I'm trying to get our team ready to play the Chiefs and then after that and so on and so forth. I don't look at it that way. I'm not taking any half-swings
here. We'll just play it out."
He added:
"I feel good about where we're going, we've just got to keep going. It's easy to let that momentum stop. That's what I'm guarding against, and I think our locker room understands that it's important you jump right back in the process."
The media questioning has become significant and timely since departure of Shurmur’s boss president Mike Holmgren. He and general manager Tom Heckert were hired by Holmgren, but probably Shurmur is waiting for some miracle to happen as far as the Browns’
performance is concern, which then can determine his future.
His possible plans of staying with the Browns might not work out because a large number of fans are against the coach and wisdom of the team’s rebuilding. On the other hand, his poor record can also diminish his prospects of winning a similar role from another
team.
As he is willing at the moment at least to risk his reputation while waiting to see the Browns as a finished product, the time is running out for him with regard to his prospects as head coach.
The Browns are 4-8 and even if they are able to pull off victories in another pair of the games, out of the total four they have left to play, a 6-10 record might not be convincing for other teams to accommodate him as a coach.
He needs to start working on the future now before it is too late. It is a completely different question whether he should show his cards or keep them closer to his chest.
