Coach Rashid Sidek says training programme of back-up shuttlers will continue without interruption
Rashid Sidek, the Malaysian national coach of Singles has made it clear that the training programme of back-up shuttlers will continue without interruption as only a few young shuttlers will work as sparring partners of top seed, Lee Chong Wei in his training
sessions.
Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) decided to merge back-up shuttlers with the elite squad during training sessions and young shuttlers will serve as sparring partners of Chong Wei in training sessions. The move had given the impression that back-up
shuttlers would suffer as they will be ignored and the focus of coaches will remain on elite shuttlers.
Rashid confirmed that Mohd Arif Abdul Latif, Goh Soon Huat and Misbun Ramdan Misbun will be regular sparring partners of the World Number One, while the rest of back-up players will continue training according to the programme set by Hendrawan, the coach
of Men’s Singles back-up squad.
Rashid said, “There has been some confusion but the training programme of the back-up players will not be disrupted. We will only use the better players to spar with Chong Wei on a more regular basis as they will benefit from training with the World No 1.”
He added, “Thus, Hendrawan's programme will not be disrupted as he can continue grooming the younger group. The back-up players normally have their own training for an hour before sparring sessions begin and they are put through extra sessions if needed.”
Rashid also expressed that only those shuttlers from the back-up squad will be able to train on a continuous basis which show improvement while working with elite shuttlers. The coach also wants shuttlers to learn the technical and tactical aspects of badminton.
There are a few shuttlers who have been working with the World Number One for the last couple of weeks because of the absence of Daren Liew and Chong Wei Feng. These shuttlers have been busy playing at the Taiwan Open and China Master’s Super Series.
