Coach of Italian Epee discipline, Sandro Cuomo, speaks about 2011 European Championships
Today, the coach of Epee Fencing team, Sandro Cuomo gave his comments about the 2011 European Championships that will start in Sheffield, on Wednesday, July 13. The coach talked about the athletes, who are engaged in their training camps these days.
The athletes are already experiencing the atmosphere of expectation. The 2011 European Championships will include the Paralympic Fencing also. The 2011 Europeans Championships, in fact, are not just the gateway for winning the continental title, but it may
also serve the purpose of Olympic qualifiers, as good quality of double worth of the points will be earned by each winning fencer for each event.
The Epee Coach, Cuomo, said about the 2011 European Championships, "Precisely for this reason is not an event that can be tackled lightly. For my part, in the light of the importance of this competition in the squad I have followed the logic related to the
Olympic qualification.”
Cuomo has nominated total twelve athletes, out of which the qualifier will be chosen to the Sheffield Championships. The Men's Epee Individuals are Paul Pizzo, Tagliariol Matteo, Stephen and Alfredo Rota Carozzo, who will definitely qualify for the championships
because of their high qualifying points in the previous events. The rest will remain in England for the Team trials, to represent Italy as well as a "veteran". These includes are Henry Garozzo, Matthew Trager and Luca Ferraris. The Italian women fencers, Nathalie
Moellhausen, White Del Carretto, Mara Navarria and newcomer Scarlett Fiamingo and Cristiana Cascioli will represent the Women's Individual.
Cuomo said that the fencers who will pass the Olympic qualification, their points are based on Individual competitions. The coach said that the athletes, who will be having the highest points, will definitely qualify for the 2012 London Olympics.
He further told that the qualification points for 2012 London Olympic are valid after the World Cup tournaments of April 1, 2011. The coach told about the performance of Italian Epee Team and that they are much confident to win the titles in both Individual
and Team events.
