In your opinion, what are the differences between a pool coach and a pool instructor? What role does each play and what duties do each perform? M.D.-BCA Instructor/Referee.

  1. I think the duties of both are clear, as Johnny gave a good explanation, but I'm just wondering!, does the coach set up

any games, if money is involved, and he tells you what tournaments to attend?.

I really don't think that I would ever use a coach, as he has to know completely what I am capable of, and have the insight on tournaments, and who is going to be there, to see if I should take part in it.  and I wouldn't trust him! $$$.

II would rather coach myself, I wouldn't want any disagreements, with a coach on what my moves should or shouldn't be!.

What percentage does a coach take?.

I can see going to an instructor, to see some things I may be doing wrong, and correct me on them, and wether I see him again would depend on results!

.EDIT-Thanks Johnny!, I don't think I'll ever be ready for agents, unless I go Hollywood!, so I won't worry about it!.

  2. Short form

Inst shows you how to do it

Coach tells you when to do it

Football coach does not teach the Qback how to throw the ball rather who to and when

  3. I think of the pros as having coaches...They're obviously good enough that they probably just need tweaking now and then. Having no personal experience with formal pool instruction, I'm just guessing that most lessons deal with mechanics and strategy, while a coach may deal more with the mental part of the game (in addition to the tweaking of the mechanics). I see a coach watching tournaments, offering advice in between matches. I don't know that a coach would have the knowledge to break down someone's game and start from scratch, as you mentioned a good instructor would. I also don't know if a coach would have the instructor's ability to make concise explanations and give clear instructions.

p.s. I don't even actually know which pros have coaches...I know Jasmin Ouschan does, and at the Ladies' Spirit Tour event last month, there was a guy hanging around Tracie Hines whom I took to be her coach, but I don't know for sure.

  4. coach

  5. I think Johnny is close but he may should have said instructor vs mentor/stakehorse.

To me a instructor starts with a unskilled or nearly so person in other words a blank or near blank slate. How well he teaches or conveys knowledge to the student is the measure of the instructors aptitude.

A coach on the other hand is more the consument observer. He has to contend with a player who "knows" how to play. Coaches that I have used concentrate on things like tempo, rhythmn, head raising, not comitting to shots what have you. I can generally beat the coaches I've had, but their observations on little nuances have many times over paid for their services.

If you can play ...get a coach.

If you can't play or not that well get an instructor...FAST.

A good instructor will get to to the stage of winning much faster than you can by yourself.
