Coaches, Captains and Squads - Split roles in Cricket – Opinion – Part 2
Continued from Part 1...
They know that they can trust Flower blindly, a quality hard to find in this age, even with considerable finances at your disposal. For all the love KP has received, his stand off taught them a real lesson. Flower’s man management skills, coupled with his
trustworthiness, made ECB realize that they need to pay more attention towards its employees, as it is the only way to keep them on board, and more importantly, motivated and eager to guide the team to further success.
It has become clear that the financial power can only be guaranteed if they play more games throughout the year, and gain from broadcasters, advertisers and a host of other revenue streams. But credit must be given to them for clever investments and prudent
management. Their model may be ‘crazy’ (in the words of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/KP-Pietersen-c1806) and tough on their staff but their handling needs to be admired.
Moreover, they want Flower to stay on in the Test arena, a format which will only continue to remain the ultimate if the best players and coaches stay and perform. Reportedly the ECB had been planning this move for quite some time now, and were clear in
their minds regarding Flower’s eventual successor.
Ashley Giles’ name may not be the most popular among English fans, but his credentials and ability make him a worthy understudy – he commands respect in the side, and will very much be one of ECB’s own.
Whether the end product will yield the desired result or not remains to be seen, as conflicts of interest could certainly arise where several minds are in the mix. However, for now they believe that they are in a good space. They have already tried three
separate captains during Andrew Strauss’ playing days and that worked out smoothly; hence there is little to suggest that the current move may not work. Having won back-to-back Ashes, climbed to the top of the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/ICC-World-Cup-2011-c100625 Test rankings, and lifted the World T20 in
2010, the only major trophy that needs to be conquered is the fifty-over World Cup.
Flower asserted that he would have loved to guide http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013 to that achievement but he knew that it was time that he delegated some of his duties and gave time to his young family.
"There is a bit of unfinished business. But I hope to see http://www.senore.com/Cricket/AN-Cook-c1026 hoisting a trophy above their heads at some stage. I will be watching but not there on a day to day level. It is a little sad to be stepping away to be honest. But I
will certainly gain in other areas of my life. I don't believe this decision will bring an erosion of my authority or influence," he said.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gary-Kirsten-c58527 a chance to concentrate on the other two versions and focus on protecting their Test mace alongside aiming for ODI glory.
At the end of it all, split roles in cricket have become the need of the hour be it coaches or captains, as quality does not come in abundance, especially in cricket, where  the advent of the shortest version may see a weakened generation, much in need of
proper guidance.
