  1. first thing that you must have is the love for coaching and basketball. the kids would not only learn a thing or two from you but would be also inspired by you as your love for the game and for the things you are doing right now would inspire them and light up a fire within them. you also need to have patience when coaching these kids. the intellectual level of a kid is different from that of an adult so make sure you're talking to them is not in vain. plus, this is the start of their basketball career, so should thoroughly guide them and prepare them for the future so as to help them become better in the game of basketball. practice what you preach. sometimes your lectures won't be able to reach this kids so make sure you'll be able to teach this kids in a creative way. also, these kids asks a lot of question as to why they should do this or that. what you must do in this kind of situations is to point out popular NBA players who became what they are right now because they did the things that you are asking them to do. and always inspire them to work hard and to never quit! they may lose the will to play ball, but you must always encourage them. there are plenty of reasons why they shouldn't quit. its up to you to decide which reason to say, depending on the kids personality.

  2. Make sure they have fun and make friends, but make sure its serious fun, if they are all having fun playing a game, but traveling and double dribbleing, then you aren't doing your job.

A good thing to do with kids basketball is have them play a game, split the team in half and play a game, and be the ref, now lets say tommy is defending jack, tommy smacks  jacks ball 10 rows in the crowd when he gos for a shot, you stop the game and shot jack how to pump fake or pass, and make sure every1 else see's. same with the calls, show them what they do wrong and how to fix it instead of screaming.

There are no requirments, they rpolly gonna do a backround check to make sure u not a preditor but other than that it depends, like at schools u gotta be a teacher, at the park district you gotta work for the park, be a parent or know someone on the team, and at some fancy leagues you must qualify for it.

    good luck, chano

  3. Teach them the fundamentals of the game, also how to love and have fun playing the game of basketball.

  4. Make everything for them about having fun and making friends!

With the basketball, teach them the basics first and then give them a lot of running around playing time.

    Hope this helps!

  5. Fundamentals. Do a lot of dribbling, passing and simple footwork drills. Make them fun, too. Also, do not spend a lot of time having them run sprints. At the earliest years kids don't need to be in great shape as there isn't a lot of skill level difference. Also, concentrate on shooting fundamentals - DON'T let them shoot from their hip! Teach them proper shooting techniques. I've had fourth graders shoot 15 foot jump shots with proper technique, so it can be done. And one HUGE thing is teach them to use BOTH hands when shooting layups and dribbling.
