  1. a tricky problem you have. Is the access on your property or on the public highway?

Was the original cover of architectural interest hence the reason for its theft ? If so, will you want or be compelled to replace with a suitably ancient artifact, or can it be a modern replacement, say steel checkerplate, flame-cut to size ?

If it has to be 'in character' with the age of the property, then architectural salvage firms are the main source of a replacement. Look in your 'Yellow Pages' or online. One of the biggest is in Cambridgeshire, but there's bound to be one or two in London, probably many more. You might even fine your very own 'coal-hole cover' sitting on a dealer's shelf !

If a modern replacement is acceptable, then make a careful pattern from stiff/corrugated  cardboard, to exactly fit the opening.

Again, using YP or the internet, look for architectural engineers, blacksmiths, steel stockholders who cut to size etc. Find the nearest and ask them if they can cut steel checkerplate to size and shape. Its the steel plate used for decking, and has a raised pattern embossed into the surface.  When cut with plasma jets, the edge is very neat and will need hardly any extra work.

    Good luck.
