Question:

Coast Guard vs. Homeschoolers?

I've wanted to join the Coast Guard for several years now. I'm not inshape at all but I'm getting there. I finally went to talk to a recruiter and he said because I graduated highschool as a homeschooler I'm required to go to college for 15 credit hours (which is nothing).

You might think, "Well, it's only 15 credit hours you might as well do it."

I'm thinking, "Well, it's only 15 credit hours. Pointless. Why are homeschoolers made to go above and beyond?"

Everyone is required to take the ASVAB before joining. If I flunk that then I should be required to go to college. Not before. I could be a genius for all they know! I'm not, but I could be! haha

Is Coast Guard the only armed services that requires this of a homeschooler? If not, who else?

What are your thoughts on the matter?

  1. One word- Discrimination. They think they can get away with this. There is nothing on their site that says you have to take extra credits at a college before joining. You can even join in at the age of 17 with parental consent. I suggest you contact The Homeschool Legal Defense Association and have them send them a letter. Having a letter by a Lawyer would be enough to change their minds real quick.

  2. I do not think this is fare. They should treat you just like anyone else. Just because you got your education a different way then others does not mean you did not get a good education. If  a homeschooler is not smart they will fail the ASVAB test, if they are smart enough to be in the coast guard they will pass.

  3. Contact the Home School Legal Defense Association since they have all the information that you will need regarding joining the military, and coast guard.
