Question:

Cockatiel breeding problem?

I have observed that the female cockatiel is making approaches to the male by ducking her head, lowering her body and even nudging the male showing signs of obviously wanting to mate. However the male is not deceptive of these approaches- either flying off or giving her a nip.

We seperated them from budgies who were inturrupting them when mating- since they were seperated we think they have completed stopped mating.

Any ideas what is going on?

  1. Aves Viagra?

  2. You're positive the male is a male?

Because sometimes if placed together even same s*x birds will start making advances towards one another.

I have two male society finches I use as fosters that try to rape each other on a nearly daily basis - courting each other as if one another was a female, when they truly know the other is not.

It's just a result of housing them together as a pair for a period of time.

Maybe the bird isn't reacting because.. well.. it's not a male?

Either that, or as already suggested, maybe he's just.. "not that into her.."

    It happens.

  3. hi! i basically had the same problem just about 2 months ago with my parakeets! The only difference was the male wanted to mate while the female wanted to be left alone. Soon later i discovered that when i was not around they were lovers. The male bird just might be shy around you. It is sort of a personal thing. Just wait and see what happens! Now i have 2 beautiful babies that are already 3 weeks old!

  4. I keep my breeders in the bird room alone, try to pick a quiet room for them and don't allow to many different people bother them, mix crushed hard boiled eggshells in with their food for extra calseium and mine love the smashed egg too(protein)take out egg in about 4to6 hours.Good luck.

  5. Hello.

Believe it or not ...birds do choose their own mates . I have a pair of teils for 2 years , they perch on separate one far apart and don't like to get near each other ...( the female keeps laying infertile eggs and the male ignore her completely ) I also have a pair , I put them together , 3 weeks later they hatched a few babies ...that mean ...Bam! They like each other first sight ! So in your case , I would change the mates and they would be fine . ( This is one of the option , another reason , may be your male is not ready . All you have to do is wait . Good luck ! TM.
