  1. I had one and I sprayed stuff in the house l all the time. It had no effect on him. If you get one after spraying 2 weeks prior it will be fine. If you want to make sure all the time just remove him outside for a few hours whilst you spray your chemicals. I have a rainbow lorrikeet inside and I spray everything and he is never upset by it. He just tells me to "shut up" And also asks me " do you want a drink" They are a little more durable than people make out i think.

( just don't spray it in his face and you and your bird will be getting along  great)

  2. Gigi gave a great answer as far as the air fresheners go.

Teflon pans can harm your birds *If* you burn them. If you are sure you can cook in teflon without burning the food, then teflon will be ok. Most bird lovers don't want to take the chance though.

Scented candles can also harm the birds.  It is the essential oils used to create the fragrance which can be harmful. Not all oils are harmful, but again few experiences bird owners will take the chance.

Also be aware that many household cleaners can give off fumes which are dangerous for your bird. Do a search of the Internet to find a list of the safe household chemicals you can use. I also think they have extensive files on this subject at the Yahoo Group called helloeberybirdie . They might be able to help you.

I commend you for being so concerned about the welfare of your bird!

    Good Luck

  3. It's the airborne particles that will hurt him--two weeks is plenty of time for them to settle. But you should not use air fresheners, nonstick cookware, or scented candles if you have birds in the house, as these are all deadly. Also birds don't have diaphragms, so they can't cough--so you may easily not realize their lungs are damaged and/or full of junk. This coupled with the fact that birds always try to hide illnesses means that a bird may look fine even though it's actually dying.

  4. my house is filled with birds its like a little avian paradise. I dont use any air fresh, just because i dont want to take my chances.

But if you spray your house now and you said you gettin a cockateil in two weeks he should be fine. It wont cause any problems.

good luck with the cockateil i guarantee you will have a lot of fun

    PS> Dont use teflon :)

ANd try not to keep him in the cage for to long. After a week or two you can open the cage for him to slowly come out, Mine cockateils are never in the cage. Anyway it seems like i get carried away with answering :) Good luck
