My bird won't stop laying eggs; she's in a cage by herself so they can't be fertile but she will lay about 5 eggs, one every other day, and then she'll stop but then in a month or so she'll start laying them again. She used to be in a cage with another female but she wasn't letting her eat so we put her in another cage in hopes that she would gain some weight. But she still won't eat much and it can't be healthy for her to be laying so many eggs. She doesn't act protective of them, she jsut lays them and forgets about them... is there any way to stop her egg laying habits

  1. i dont know how you would stop her laying eggs she shouldnt be doing that but make sure you give her alot of calcium she is being deprived because od the eggs. scrape cuttle bone pieces into her food or grind up pieces of eggshell, you could even use the ones she laying, and put that into her foood

  2. My sister had the same problem with one of her females. She tried all the advice given to her by the vet, such as reducing her day light hours, taking away the millet, giving her alot of veggies, not handling her as much, taking all the paper out of the cage, etc. But nothing worked as well as the hormone shot she got. It did take 2 shots a month apart to get it under control, but it did work. You can also replace the real eggs with fake ones. Most times they dont realize the eggs are fake and it will allow her to nest. Dont keep thowing them away as she will just lay more.I wish you luck; I know how frustrating this is.

  3. Females mostly lay infertile eggs, because they are lonely. She could die from laying too much eggs, as though she loses all her protein and calcium. Which is bad. Try and feed her with your fingers. Put tons of toys, to keep her active. Put at least 2cuttle bones, and a mineral block. You can buy Quiko Classic Egg Food Supplement for All Birds at PetSmart. Buy anything to make her vitamins and protein go up. Good Luck.

P.s. you can call the vet and ask them this question, and they'll tell you what to do.

  4. I had the same experience. My vet told me to give her plenty exercise and cover her for more hours of darkness. You should also buy a fake egg for her and remove the real ones so they don't rot and make her sick. If you don't get a fake one she will keep laying.
