I have had my cockatiel, Leo for about 3 months and he is about a year old. Right under his head is a feather indention, what I mean by that is, it looks like he is losing feathers, he isn't plucking them, he can't reach where it is, I looked there and it looked like there were feathers growing there, even so, it's worrying me. Any advice?

  1. hes molting. they will lose feathers and grow new ones

  2. if your bird is losing feathers you might want to check it out by taking the bird to the vet

  3. he is molting thats is normal. dont be freaked out. he grows new ones.

  4. Hes molting, its perfectly normal. All birds molt when a new season comes into play. They Molt the feathers they have, and they fall out (the bird will look very scruffy and horrible lol) but its normal. They do this when they know the season is changing. If they are molting for summer, they loose their feathers and grow back thinner feathers to prevent them from getting too hot in the heat.

If it is winter, then they molt their feathers to grow back thicker ones, and prevent them from getting too cold. Its nothing to worry about. I would suggest giving him a high protien diet in this time to help strengthen his immune system, and aid in growing back strong feathers. For interests sake, if you are worried about it, check for blood in the feathers, if there is no blood, then its perfectly normal. You could aways take him to an avian vet for a checkup just to be sure and make you feel a little bit better about his health =]

Try giving him cuddle bone, and boiled or scrabled eggs (no oil or seasoning) this is very good for them and is high in protien! They love this.

Hope this helps you and good luck!
