i brought 2 hand reared cockatiels 5 days ago.they are both 5 months old and i think they are both male.

im a little worried as they both sometimes puff out and shake.

they dont do it all of the time mainley when i go near them.and they also do it when they sleep.

they are both eating and drinking and makeing plenty of noise.and they both climb out of the cage and around the top of the cage.to get exercise

and they keep flying out of the cage and flying into things and 1 of them cut there nose a little as he flew into my mirror on the wall.

i have never had birds before, and i think it maybe coz there getting used to everything around them and there cage.

any comments appreciated.

thankyou

  1. Clip their wings they can bruise their chest and die if they hit to hard. Also leave a light 60 watt bulb on by their cage for heat. I do that with mine because they live in the basement and it tends to be cooler down there, but don't let them hurt themselves flying around even with clipped wings they will glide to the floor or be able to fly off a cage to your head or shoulder mine do it all the time. My desk is next to their cage and I always have one of them if not both of them on my head. Good luck they are awesome little birds

  2. Birds usually puff out and shake (only a couple of shakes, not continuous shaking) when they are getting ready to go to sleep it keeps them warm, if they are doing it alot during the day maybe they are cold.  Birds will fly into things while they are getting used to your home so don't worry too much.

The best way of getting them used to you is to find a treat they like and offer it to them from your hand, they are young enough for you to make them become very friendly with you in the future and usually treats/food is the best way to help that process along.  They sound happy enough, there are lots of websites about how to look after birds so you should be fine.

P.S. Remember to cover their cage at night.

  3. they are ok from what you explained

cockatiel do that (the puffing and shaking thing) i think it's called preening and as a far as the flying thing if you don't want them to do it just get there wing clip.

  4. Cockatiels usally puff out to keep warm. I have had my two cockatiels for a few weeks and they always do it. Nothing to worry about! Mine also like to fly! One of my birds cut open her wing, but it will heal quickly! They're very good birds! And they learn quickly! Hope that helps
