Question:

Cockatiel in bedroom?

I'm planning on getting a cockatiel soon and I was wondering if there would be any problems with keeping it in my bedroom. I have two cats and the bedrooms are the only places off limits to them in the house. I don't want to risk leaving them out of the rooms because the cats can get into anything. I heard something about there being health risks to being in a room with a bird all of the time. Is this true?

Also, does anyone know anything about petsmart not selling cockatiels anymore? They did pretty recently and then when my mom took me today to look at the birds they said they didn't sell them anymore.

  1. I have 2 parakeets that stay in my room and they are perfectly happy and healthy.  I have them near the window so in the morning when the sun comes out they wake up so sleeping late in my house is not an option.  They make very little noise at night-just cover your bird up at night and you will both be fine.  As for the cats well they are hunters by nature so be very careful.  If they are not allowed in your room then that is probably the safest place.   As for petsmart not selling birds there was a report about the birds having some diseases.  Good luck!

  2. No There is no issues with keeping the bird in your room at all.. The only thing is that I would recommended that you use a sheet to cover the bird at night so he sleeps well and doesn't wake up until you do.. I have to do that with my bird .. If i dont cover him he will wake me up but If i cover him he doesn't get up until I uncover him.. Also make sure you stay on top of cleaning the birds cage.. keep the dander and dust down.

PetSmart Might not be selling them because whoever they get them from like the breeder might have had issues with the birds.. Such as them getting ill or a virus.. Check into that... That is something that happen where I live with my local Petsmart.

  3. I would not keep my bird in my room.  They like to be with the flock... in this case you and your family.  They need lots of attention and the more you include them the happier they will be.  I would get a nice big cage with a stand to keep them up high... not cause the cat's won't get up there but cause they like being up high.  Get a lock to keep the cats out.  I think with a lil time you can teach the cats to stay away.  It may be a good idea to get the cage a week or so ahead of time and say no to the cats when they get near it.  (sorry, don't know much about cats)

DON'T buy your bird at petsmart..... please!!!!!!!!

use http://www.birdbreeders.com/breedersearc... to find a breeder in your area.  Your bird will be hand fed and pampered if you find a good breeder.  It will be used to people and it will most likely not be sick.  Petsmart birds are shipped and treated like any other product they sell.  If you buy from a breeder .. these birds are their babies.

    Good luck!

  4. Cockatiels can produce a lot of dander (dust) and may not be suitable in your bedroom. You don't to be breathing the dust or having the dust in your bed. Its best to get a cockatiel from a private bird breeder and ask them to deliver the bird to you. They may ask for a small gas fee. See www.kijiji.com for bird breeders in your area.

  5. I have my Sun Conure living in my bedroom with me. its fine as long as you don't mind them making noise at times when your asleep. Mine does every once in a while make noise Or Say something, (she knows various words,)

  6. Cockatiels are dusty birds. You will have to keep the room dusted to avoid problems. An air filter might be helpful.

Petsmart stopped selling larger birds a while back after they were found selling sick birds from bird mills. The smaller birds were also becoming ill with very serious diseases. After a series of lawsuits and bad publicity they decided there wasn't enough profit in it.

  7. it's not a problem, but make sure you keep it clean, the cage and the area around it, since dust mites aren't good for you and the tiel.

and petsmart run out of tiel really quickly, since they only get 3-5 in one shipment.

you might not be able to see them now till next spring or late winter, their mating season is going to start soon.  so they don't come available until they are ready to go home.

if you can go to kijiji.com and look for them around your area.  you might have a better luck

  8. Find a breeder in your area who hand feeds their babies and adopt one of them, otherwise you will end up with a wild bird you can't handle in most cases. As far as them being a health risk, they are not unless you have allergies from them or Asama. You can keep their dust and dander down by spraying them with water once or twice a week. And keep their living area clean as well.

  9. for most of the summer our petsmart was not allowed to sell birds because all of their birds were very sick. so ia m not suprised they do not sell teils anymore. i saw sick birds there this week too.

do not keep the teil in your room. it needs a lot of room and a nice big window to get sunshine. they are very messy and they are also very noisy and require a quiet sleeping area. my birds have their own room.

if you do get one buy a lock for your door because cats are freaking smart and they will figure out how to open the door. a lock with a key will be best. they will go crazy trying to get in so be ready for it.

not only can cats hurt the bird the bird can also hurt the cats quite a bit with their beaks.

    best wishes and gl.
