One of my female cockatiels is laying eggs, in intervals. She layed 4 and stopped for a week(whenever I checked there were only 4). I recenetly checked up on the nest and there were 7. The nest is under the cage, on a old shirt I put down for her.Is there something I should do, this is her second clutch of eggs, her last one was layed about 5 to 6 weeks before this one. Any help?

  1. notIf there is no male and the eggs are fertilized, then when she isn't sitting on the eggs take them and throw them away. She will be her old self in a day or two.

  2. Why not get her a male,so the eggs can be fertile. You have a dream bird, breeders would love to have a natural mother. She would be great.

  3. Your hen will end up with a calcium deficiency. You need to feed her a plain diet so she will quit laying. give her a diet of canary seed with a leaf of kale green every day. About once a week give it some fruit. Put her in the cage and don't buy a nest or put anything for her to nest on. When a bird goes through a calcium deficiency it affects their muscles and the heart is the most important one in the body.

Some people think it is cute that they have a single bird and it wants to go to nest. They seem to think is neat for them to lay eggs in a box, or cabinet or what ever. They are slowly killing their birds.

You need to purchase a book and read about cockatiels. People post all kind of misconceptions and fallacies on this forum. If you cherish your cockatiel you need to purchase a good book and read what you need to do to keep your bird from laying herself to death.

PS  A local vet charged my aunt over three hundred dollars to perform a hysterectomy on her parakeet. I could have saved her a bunch of money. She kept feeding it high protein foods and kept the birds system so charged up that she would not quit laying eggs.
