What should I do to help my new (and first) cockaitel to get to know and like me? I got him yesterday, should I give him about a week? In between should I talk to him, or something?

Any tips for a first time cokcatiel owner?

  1. Its good to give them a little time to adjust to you and its new surroundings but it is also important to spend time with it.  Talk to it every time you walk by its cage, try feeding it some millet from your hand, and once it will step onto your finger try teaching it to sit on your shoulder which shouldn't be hard since its pretty much instinct.  Time with you daily is very important to build and maintain a good relationship with your bird.  It will also depend on whether it is hand raised or raised in the store, hand fed birds are the way to go if you're a first time owner, if not hand fed, they can still be tamed.  I recommend going to birdtricks.com for some video tips and training videos if you're interested.  I hope this helps, good luck!

  2. best i can tell you is go to the store and buy a book!i did this with my budgie and it workd wonders! now i believe hes the hapiest budgie!

  3. It takes time for them to get to know you.  Yes talking to him will be good

  4. I would give it about a week until you hold it or take it out of its cage. But If you want it to talk I would start repeating words and phrases in a calm voice. It may take it 2-4 weeks for it to learn. Also just say things to it in a calm sweet voice to get it use to you like "Hello, how are you?" and "Today I'm going shopping" and little things like that. After it gets use to you talking to it you can slip treats through the bars of the cage to get it used to being near you. Hope this helps.

  5. When I first got Pingu, I left him in his cage and just let him settle in with his new surroundings. I talked to him a bit, but he just sat there very quietly. So i left the cage door open and eventually, he made his own way out of the cage. Gradually, he let me touch him more, i.e. he would step on my finger.

Just do things in steps, and be patient. I also find that because I play with Pingu the most AND I'm the one that feeds him - he is more attached to me than anyone else in my family
