i have 2 cockatiels when i brought them from a pet shop i was told they thought they were both boys but they wernt sure due to them only being 5months old.then i took them to a vet as i had there wings clipped and he sed he thought 1 was a girl.but he also wasnt sure either

anyway in the last few days the 1 who i think could be a girl has been acting strangely.she isnt very vocal normally unless the other flys out of the cage but she keeps crouching down with her bum up in the air and very slighty moveing her wings and makeing a very low squeaking sound.

is this a sign of wanting to mate?

or anyone else had this happen to?

  1. That sure is breeding behavior.

  2. she is afemale wanting to mate, but since she is young i wouldnt reccommend it so i would reccommend to seperate the tiels and put them in the same room but not where they can see each other.

  3. Hello- i agree with mis mellon, these are sighs of mating, it must have been 1 lousy pet shop, you need 2 put them in different cages (but next 2 eachother) and wait for about a week.

if these things keep happening then i think take her to the avian vet, if shes spitting and squarking low it also might mean shes preagnant, but i doubt it,

  5. You are exactly right. Those are signs of the female wanting to breed. But she is way too young. You want to discourage breeding at this point. Make a few changes . Move the cage to a different location. Change things around in the cage, move toys, and a perch to a different location. Give less sunlight and cover the cage earlier in the evening giving them 10 to 12 hours of sleep time. They really wouldnt know what to do with eggs at this time.
