Cockatiels and ceiling fans?

i keep my cockatiel in my room but it gets kinda hot. i've heard that you're not supposed to turn the ceiling fan on because your bird might fly into it, but he's usually in his cage when i'm gone so that isn't really an issue, but i've also heard that they're not supposed to be exposed to drafts. is that true? coud making my room cooler actually endanger my cockatiel? i was told that just to be safe i should just cover three sides of his cage, but how thick should the blanket be? i have sheets, a light soft blanket, and a heavier wool one. and what about the other side? that side faces the wall, but wouldn't air still be going in through that side? and causing a draft thereby defeating the purpose of the blanket? what can i do?

  1. A "draft" is usually considered to be air of cooler temperature.  Putting a cage right next to a very cold window, even though the air isn't moving, is considered a "draft".

Moving air that is the same temperature as the ambient room air isn't a "draft", it's only moving air.  So unless that ceiling fan is really whipping up a hurricane, your bird will be fine.  No cover is required unless you've got a really stiff wind blowing directly on your bird.  Just remember that fan is on and turn it off before you let your bird out of his cage.

  2. I have a ceiling fan in my bird room that runs 24/7. My birds have never hit because I allow it on while they are inside of their cage to SEE what it is doing. They know not to fly that high into it and you will be surprised just how smart cockatiels are when it comes to never flying around it or near it. My birds are outside their cages most 24/7 and know better.
