i have just bought two tame cockatiels, one of which is poorly but i gave her a home cause i didnt want her to miss her healtheier feathered friend 'baby'. She was finger tame with her previous owner and is only 3months old, i want her to be the same with me i spend time with her every day and she eats food from my hand, does any one have any advice on how to start getting the bond between me and baby strong so that she can come out and sit on my hand etc....

  1. I would recommed trying to handle her in her cage just placing your hand into the cage and letting her step on if she wants to.

    But if you want her to sit with you when shes out of the cage then i would recommend taking her to the vets and having one of her wings clipped, this way she can fly but only short distances.

    I would recommend though only getting her wings clipped a few times and then stop as by this time she should be used to you and so will just sit there even if she can fly.

  2. Trick training creates a really poweful bond. It's comparable to everytime your parents come into the room, they take you to your favorite place to have fun and it's a challenging but fun place you love. You would look forward to seeing them and being with them, right? Trick training does the same thing for birds. It mentally stimulates and challenges them, it actually teaches them how to learn.

    And then they look forward to spending time with you. You do not always have to trick train but it's a great thing to start.

    Target training can make it easier to teach your bird tricks and it's an easy behavior to start with. It's explained here;

    Make sure your bird is not on an all seed diet otherwise it will be hard to train using seeds as treats. They should be on a pellet diet with lots of fresh foods explained here;
